The client's of this courtyard wanted to create a lush oasis but didn't want things too manicured. The courtyard isn't huge but it did have a ledge that offered us an opportunity to create a mix of different heights using trough planters in a range of sizes. We planted up these troughs with a combination of spilling groundcovers such as Veronica perfoliata, grassy foliage including Kangaroo paw and some small spreading shrubs like Correa and Thryptomene. If you were looking to pick the harshest location for plants you wouldn't have to look too far past this rooftop. This rooftop receives full sun from dawn to dusk and is exposed to winds from the north and west. On top of this exposure is a soil depth of only 10-15cm to work with! A true test of a plants tolerance to heat, dry and exposure. Tucked in behind a historic bluestone home built in the 1840s lay a garden brimming with potential for a perennial makeover. The long straight garden bed ran the length of the courtyard and was a mass of weeds and overgrown Salvias which were far too big for the garden. The first assignment was to clear it all out and bring in fresh compost. We excavated to a depth of 100mm to ensure we had removed all the roots and weeds.
